It is widely acknowledged that the transition from SportsTG to Basketball Connect was poorly executed, negatively impacting Association and Club Administrators, as well as participants. There has been ongoing confusion and concern around how the current registration fee is charged.
As a result, the BBI administrative team has worked hard to identify a different way of capturing the registration fee that is simple to manage for all administrators and, just as importantly, simple for the member to understand. This is how we established that a competition fee is the best option.
What is a Competition Fee, and how much will it cost?
The competition fee will replace the Registration fee. The competition fee will be applied to each competition that an individual registers for. The competition fee will be approximately 50% of the current registration fee + CPI + rounding. Please note that GBL has an additional increase, which assists in covering the cost of delivering the competition. The figures below include GST.

What about the players with Registrations that extend into the coming season?
There are a significant number of members who have a current registration that extends into the coming season. BBI wanted to identify a way to transition away from the registration fee to a competition fee that has no impact on the member i.e. doesn’t require them to jump through hoops. As a result, BBI will adopt a process of issuing refunds; whilst this is the most intensive option for the BBI admin team, it is the best option for the membership.
So how and when will refunds be processed?
‘End dates’ have been determined for senior registrations. These dates are used to establish the refund amount owing.
With this in mind, BBI will commence processing senior refunds from 01/02/2026. We are projecting that it will take up to 2 months to process all refunds owing.
But why can’t credits be issued?
Unfortunately, there is no option in the system to issue credits; if there were, this would significantly reduce the time commitment of BBI. It is also important to note that we did look at issuing discount codes; however, this would be both time-intensive and would also require the members to claim the discount. In some cases, two discount codes would need to be issued to the member, as many refunds exceed the competition fee.
What if a nominal refund is owed?
It has been decided that any refund that is less than $20.00 will be determined as a ‘nominal amount’. As a result, anyone who falls into this category will essentially need to be ‘claimed’. This process is slightly expanded on below. Any funds not claimed will go towards the reinstatement project – a history project to be located on the mezzanine floor.
