Brisbane Basketball extends its sincere appreciation to Rod Sengstock for his many years of valued service on the Management Committee. Throughout his time with the association, Rod has shown exceptional commitment and has played an important role in supporting and guiding Brisbane Basketball.
We thank Rod for the time, effort, and passion he has contributed over the years and wish him all the very best for the future. We look forward to still seeing him around the stadium.
Rod Sengstock – Contribution to Governance of BBI
Rod came to Brisbane in 1973 to study at UQ. Basketball was a new sport in his home town of Maryborough and he and his brothers had started playing just one or two years before he came to Brisbane.
He joined the Oakleigh club and began playing at Brisbane basketball.
During the following 4 years, he joined the Lang Park Club, and represented Brisbane Basketball Metz at the state U20 championships.
He was selected to represent Qld at the U20 Nationals which were held at Auchenflower.
After graduation he left Brisbane to work interstate and in Europe for 3 years. On his return to Brisbane he played A grade for Lang Park till 1983, when he was transferred to Ohio, USA.
His final basketball games were played in a Corporate Basketball competition in Ohio.
Rod reconnected with BBI in the late 1990's when his two sons, Owen and Eric and his daughter Amelia started playing. The children enjoyed playing club and rep for many years, with Eric representing Qld on two occasions, playing QBL for BBI and continuing to play social basketball. Rod’s 8yo grandson has just declared that he is going to play basketball.
Also at this stage brother Geoff had played his career at Lang Park and Brisbane Basketball, and had children playing. Brother Larry started his basketball career in Melbourne, and had less engagement with Brisbane Basketball due to his wider basketball commitments. Although he did play NBL for the bullets and AABL for Lang Park.
Rod joined the Lang Park Committee in the early 2000's and became president in 2007. A position he held for some years.
As his children progressed he moved on to join the Management Committee of BBI in 2013 and retired in 2026 from the role of VP which he had held for many years.
Rod was also an important member of the Executive Board of the BBI Management Committee and other Committees for many years.
He enjoyed the opportunity to contribute to the governance of Brisbane Basketball.
Rod’s special interest areas which remain a work in progress are:
- Increasing our court capacity.
- Improving how we monitor the workload of our athletes to help prevent overuse injuries.
Rod is very experienced in business management and negotiating at a high level and is a very logical thinker. This made his involvement in the refurbishment of BBI and endeavors to secure new courts for BBI invaluable, especially with the ongoing meetings with public servants and politicians.
Rod’s contribution to BBI has been considerable and we thank him for his many years of valuable service.
