Global Game: International Teams Bring Unforgettable Experience to Brisbane Basketball
This past weekend, a wave of international basketball energy swept through Brisbane Basketball as several BBI clubs had the rare opportunity to go head-to-head with visiting teams from New Zealand and the United States, including a high-level development squad, Next Play Global, based out of the USA.
Coach Shane Muspratt shared some context on the impressive performance of the U14 Capitals Boys Gold team. Despite being a rep side made up of younger players (a year below their opponents), the Capitals handled the fast-paced game with confidence. Next Play Global had just come off their fourth game in two days, including one that wrapped only an hour before tip-off, giving the home team a small but telling edge in energy.
Next Play’s squad, coached by professionals with ties to the NBA’s Orlando Magic and the Brisbane Bullets, brought a level of polish and athleticism that made for a fantastic learning experience. One player in particular, the son of the Bullets’ majority owner, highlighted the calibre of talent on display.
On Saturday, June 21, Brothers Basketball took on Next Play Global in what became an instant classic. Coach Henry Mahoney described it as one of the most exciting games his group has ever played.
Down by six with just nine seconds on the clock, the Brothers boys staged a dramatic comeback to force overtime. But the excitement didn’t stop there. Two more overtimes followed before Next Play finally edged out the win in triple OT.
For the Brothers team, this was more than just a basketball game. It was a once-in-a-lifetime moment and the chance to build real connections with athletes from across the world.
While the scoreboard told one story, the true takeaway was the spirit, energy and respect shown across all teams. These international matchups gave players a break from the usual rep season rhythm and offered something much bigger: opportunity.
Whether it was battling in triple overtime or exchanging stories post-game, our Brisbane Basketball players gained lifelong memories and friendships that will last far beyond the final buzzer.
