Brisbane Basketball Inc. is proud to announce that the Brisbane Capitals Men's Team has been invited to compete in the 2026 Atlas International Men’s Basketball Challenge, taking Brisbane basketball onto the international stage and establishing what is expected to become a long-term sporting and cultural partnership between Australia and China.
From 19–31 August 2026, the Brisbane Capitals will travel to China to compete in a 13-day international tournament featuring twelve games against teams including Chinese Basketball Association representative teams, the Nürnberg Falcons (Germany) and American Select Team (USA).
However, the significance of the tour extends well beyond basketball.
The invitation represents an opportunity to showcase Brisbane's sporting talent, strengthen international relationships and create meaningful pathways for athletes, coaches, volunteers and the wider basketball community.
Brisbane Basketball President Mark O'Neill said the tour reflects the organisation's vision of creating opportunities that extend beyond the basketball court.
"This is a significant milestone not only for the Brisbane Capitals but for basketball in Brisbane."
"Our players have earned the opportunity to represent our city and Queensland on an international stage, but this tour is about much more than competition. It is about building relationships, sharing cultures and creating opportunities that will benefit our community for many years to come."
The tour will also include cultural experiences, community engagement activities and business networking opportunities designed to establish lasting relationships between Brisbane and Chinese basketball organisations.
As Brisbane's premier basketball association, Brisbane Basketball supports more than 5,300 registered players, over 500 teams across 13 affiliated clubs, and a basketball community exceeding 9,000 participants, volunteers and supporters.
The China Tour represents another important step in the Association's long-term strategy to expand opportunities for athletes while raising the profile of Brisbane basketball nationally and internationally.
The initiative has already attracted the support of a major commercial partner, with additional sponsorship opportunities currently available for organisations wishing to become part of the journey.
Mr O'Neill said community support would play an important role in the success of the tour.
"One of the things that makes Brisbane Basketball so special is the strength of our community. We know our members, volunteers, clubs and supporters will be right behind the team as they prepare to represent Brisbane overseas."
The Brisbane Capitals will spend the months leading into the tournament preparing both on and off the court, with the community invited to follow the team's journey through a comprehensive communications campaign featuring player profiles, behind-the-scenes content, community events and regular tour updates.
"This isn't simply a tour," O'Neill said.
"It is the beginning of what we hope will become a long-term international relationship that creates opportunities for future generations of Brisbane basketballers."
